New Hampshire Merci Train Ceremony - September 26, 2010
After World War II, over 700 American Friendship Train railroad box cars of relief goods were sent to France by the American people. To show their appreciation, the French citizens sent 49 French railroad box cars filled with gifts of gratitude, including works of art and other artifacts of France. A box car was sent to each U.S. state, with Hawaii and D.C. sharing a car.
Each year, NH veterans of the Forty & Eight Society, a national veteran's organization, conduct the Manchester Merci Train Ceremony to honor those who died in battle. The parade begins at Jutras Post American Legion at 12:30 p.m. and will arrive at Monsignor Gilbert Park at Reed and Bremer Streets at 1:00 p.m. A ceremony will commence at 1:15 p.m. at the park.
